Your Triggers

Your Triggers Are Trying to Set You Free

Have you ever found yourself reacting to something and wondered afterwards,

"Why did I get so upset?"

Perhaps someone criticised you.

Ignored you.

Dismissed your opinion.

Made you feel invisible.

In the moment, the emotions felt overwhelming. Anger rushed through your body.

Fear crept into your chest. Sadness settled in your heart.

Most of us assume the other person caused those feelings.

But what if they didn't?

What if they revealed something that was already there?

This is one of the most life-changing shifts we can make on our healing journey.

Your triggers are not here to punish you.

They're here to set you free.

What Is a Trigger?

A trigger is simply an emotional reaction that feels much bigger than the situation

happening in front of you.

Maybe someone interrupts you during a meeting, and you feel deeply hurt.

Perhaps your partner forgets something important, and you become far angrier

than the situation seems to warrant.

Or someone rejects your idea, and suddenly you begin questioning your entire worth.

The event itself isn't usually the whole story.

Instead, the event touches something much older.

It awakens a belief you've been carrying—sometimes for decades.

Your Emotions Are Messengers

Many of us grow up believing that emotions like anger, fear and pain are problems to get rid of.

We're told not to cry.

Not to be angry.

Not to be afraid.

So we spend years trying to suppress them, distract ourselves from them or pretend they aren't there.

But what if these emotions have been trying to help you all along?

What if anger isn't your enemy?

What if fear isn't weakness?

What if pain isn't proof that something is wrong with you?

These emotions are messengers.

They arrive with something important to say.

Instead of asking you to push them away, they're inviting you to become curious.

They're asking:

"Will you listen to what I'm trying to show you?"

The Gift Hidden Inside Every Trigger

Imagine someone speaks to you in a way that makes you incredibly angry.

It's easy to believe they caused your anger.

Sometimes their behaviour may indeed be hurtful, and healthy boundaries are important.

But once the moment has passed, there's another question worth asking:

Why did this affect me so deeply?

What belief did this situation awaken?

Did it make you feel...

  • Not good enough?

  • Unworthy?

  • Powerless?

  • Invisible?

  • Unimportant?

  • Unlovable?

These beliefs are often formed during childhood, long before we had the awareness to question them.

Over time, they become part of the story we tell ourselves.

Then, years later, someone unknowingly touches that old wound, and the emotions rush back to the surface.

Not because you're broken.

But because a part of you is asking to be healed.

Healing Begins With Curiosity

The next time you feel triggered, try resisting the urge to blame yourself immediately—or someone else.

Instead, pause.

Take a slow breath.

Sit quietly with the emotion.

Then gently ask yourself:

"Why are you here?"

"What are you trying to show me?"

"What belief about myself has been activated?"

You don't need to force an answer.

Simply becoming willing to listen is often where healing begins.

Your emotions have remarkable wisdom when we stop fighting them.

You Are Not Your Beliefs

One of the greatest discoveries on the journey of healing is realizing that your beliefs are not facts.

You may have learned:

"I'm not enough."

"I'm not worthy."

"I have to earn love."

"My needs don't matter."

But these are beliefs—not truths.

They were created as your younger self tried to make sense of difficult experiences.

Today, you have the opportunity to question those stories lovingly.

To ask whether they're still serving you.

To choose something kinder.

Something truer.

Every Trigger Is an Invitation Home

Changing your past isn't about changing what happened.

It's about changing your relationship with what happened.

Every trigger offers another opportunity to release an old belief and remember who you truly are.

Not someone who is broken.

Not someone who is lacking.

But someone who has always been worthy of love.

Every moment of awareness brings you one step closer to your authentic self.

And every time you respond with curiosity instead of judgment, you loosen the grip those old stories have held over your life.

That is where freedom begins.

A Gentle Reflection

The next time anger, fear or pain appears, don't rush to push it away.

Pause.

Listen.

Ask gently:

"What are you trying to show me?"

You may discover that your trigger wasn't trying to hurt you at all.

It was simply guiding you back to a part of yourself that has been waiting—

patiently and lovingly—to be seen, healed and set free.
