We Can't Change What We Don't Notice
So far in this journey, you are beginning to change your relationship with your past.
You've questioned old beliefs.
You've started seeing people differently.
You've discovered that your past doesn't have to define your future.
Now comes one of the most important steps of all.
Begin observing yourself.
Not with criticism.
Not with guilt.
Simply with curiosity.
How are you feeling today?
Not how do you think you should be feeling.
Not how you wish you felt.
How do you honestly feel?
Angry?
Anxious?
Disconnected?
Overwhelmed?
Peaceful?
Whatever your answer is... it's okay.
Awareness is always the beginning of transformation.
Our Inner World Always Finds a Way to Express Itself
Most of us believe our emotions stay hidden inside us.
They don't.
They quietly influence the way we speak.
The way we listen.
The way we drive.
The way we care for our belongings.
The way we respond to strangers.
The way we love the people closest to us.
Everything becomes an expression of what we're carrying internally.
Until we become aware of it.
After more than fifteen years of trying to have a baby, my husband and I finally decided to begin IVF.
When the pregnancy ended, I was devastated.
The grief felt unbearable.
I had unknowingly placed every hope for my happiness into becoming a mother.
I believed that finally having a child would heal the emptiness I'd carried for so many years.
When that dream disappeared, it felt as though my entire future disappeared with it.
The pain inside me became so overwhelming that I pushed everyone away.
The people who loved me the most were often the people I hurt the most.
I didn't want comforting words.
I didn't want advice.
I just wanted to be left alone.
Looking back now, I realise something incredibly important.
I wasn't hurting people because I was a bad person.
I was hurting people because I was hurting inside.
That experience taught me enormous compassion.
Sometimes people's behaviour isn't about us at all.
It's about the pain they're carrying inside.
One of the biggest insights I had during my healing journey was this:
I often treated other people the way I secretly felt about myself.
After my younger sister was born, I spent years feeling invisible.
As an adult, I sometimes found myself making others feel invisible too.
Not intentionally.
But unconsciously.
I would become distracted.
Emotionally unavailable.
Disconnected.
I wasn't creating something new.
I was expressing what already existed inside me.
Once I saw it, everything began to change.
Your Everyday Interactions Tell a Story
Pay attention to how you move through the world.
How do you treat people?
How do you respond when someone serves you at a café?
Do you look them in the eyes?
Or are you looking at your phone?
How do you care for your home?
Your possessions?
Animals?
Nature?
Your own body?
None of these moments is insignificant.
They quietly reveal your relationship with yourself.
Look Into People's Eyes
One of the greatest gifts we can give another human being is our full attention.
When you truly look into someone's eyes, something extraordinary happens.
For a brief moment...
Two souls recognise one another.
You begin seeing beyond personalities.
Beyond appearances.
Beyond roles.
You see another human being.
I've experienced this so deeply with my dogs.
Sometimes they look at me with such unconditional love that it brings tears to my eyes.
There's no judgement.
No expectations.
Just pure presence.
It reminds me how healing it is to truly feel seen.
Awareness Changes Everything
Step Four isn't asking you to become perfect.
It's inviting you to become present.
Notice your reactions.
Notice your emotions.
Notice your habits.
Notice how you interact with the world around you.
Because once you become aware...
You have a choice.
And every new choice creates a different future.
Final Thoughts
Changing your past isn't about changing history.
It's about changing the person who carries that history.
The more aware you become of your inner world, the more your outer world naturally changes.
So today, simply observe.
Notice how you move through your day.
Notice how you speak.
Notice how you listen.
Notice how you love.
Because awareness is where healing truly begins.
Reflection Questions
How have I been feeling lately?
Do my reactions reflect peace or pain?
How do I treat the people closest to me?
Where might I be projecting my own inner wounds onto others?
What is one interaction today where I can become more present?
