Your Body Doesn’t Need More Criticism… It Needs Your Love
When was the last time you thanked your body?
Not because it looked the way you wanted it to look.
Not because it lost weight.
Not because it performed perfectly.
Not because it allowed you to get everything done.
Just...
Thank you.
Thank you for carrying me.
Thank you for breathing for me.
Thank you for getting me through another day.
Thank you for staying with me through everything I've experienced.
It's such a simple thing.
And yet, for many of us, it may feel completely unfamiliar.
Because somewhere along the way, we learned to look at our bodies through the eyes of criticism rather than love.
We Notice Everything We Want to Change
Stand in front of a mirror and notice where your eyes go.
Do they immediately find the things you love?
Or the things you wish were different?
The wrinkles.
The weight.
The stomach.
The scars.
The grey hairs.
The parts that ache.
The parts that don't work quite as well as they once did.
We can be incredibly hard on our bodies.
We compare them.
Judge them.
Fight them.
Try to change them.
And when they don't behave exactly as we'd like, we become frustrated.
"Why am I so tired?"
"Why does this hurt?"
"Why can't I lose this weight?"
"Why can't my body just do what I want it to do?"
But imagine for a moment that your body could hear every one of those words...(which it does, by the way).
Would you speak to someone you loved that way?
Your Body Has Been With You Through Everything
Think about everything your body has experienced with you.
Every childhood adventure.
Every fall.
Every heartbreak.
Every illness.
Every celebration.
Every sleepless night.
Every hug.
Every tear.
Every moment when you thought you couldn't keep going...
and somehow you did.
Your body was there.
It has carried you through every chapter of your life.
Even the chapters you wish had never happened.
And perhaps instead of asking why it isn't doing more for us...
we could begin acknowledging everything it has already done.
What If Your Body Was Never the Problem?
Sometimes we treat our body as though it's the thing standing between us and happiness.
"I'll feel confident when I lose weight."
"I'll love myself when I look younger."
"I'll be happy when I have more energy."
"I'll appreciate my body when it stops hurting."
Love becomes conditional.
I'll love you when you change.
But isn't that exactly the kind of love so many of us have spent our lives trying to heal from?
The love that says:
"Be different, and then you'll be worthy."
What if your body doesn't need to earn your love?
What if it deserves your love simply because it is yours?
We Can Fight Our Bodies Without Realising It
Sometimes the fight is obvious.
We look in the mirror and criticise ourselves.
But sometimes it's much quieter.
We ignore exhaustion.
We skip meals because we're too busy.
We refuse to rest because we feel guilty.
We keep saying yes when everything inside us wants to say no.
We push through pain because other people are depending on us.
We demand more and more from ourselves...
and then become frustrated when our body struggles to keep up.
We call that strength.
But perhaps sometimes strength looks very different.
Perhaps strength is saying:
"I've done enough for today."
Perhaps strength is resting without explaining yourself.
Perhaps strength is asking for help.
Perhaps strength is listening when your body whispers rather than waiting until it has to shout.
Your Body Is Not Asking for Perfection
Your body doesn't need you to become the perfect version of yourself.
It needs nourishment.
Rest.
Movement.
Care.
Appropriate medical support when something isn't right.
And perhaps, just as importantly...
kindness.
Imagine waking tomorrow morning and instead of immediately thinking about everything you need to change, you simply placed your hand on your heart and said:
"Thank you for another day."
What would that feel like?
Imagine getting out of the shower and looking at yourself in the mirror without searching for flaws.
Imagine simply seeing the person standing there.
The person who has lived.
Loved.
Lost.
Learned.
Fallen.
Gotten back up.
And is still here.
Perhaps your body isn't something you need to conquer.
Perhaps it's something you can finally come home to.
Place Your Hands Where You Need Love
There's a simple practice I'd love you to try.
Find somewhere quiet.
Sit comfortably.
And notice your body.
Is there somewhere you've been struggling with?
Perhaps your back.
Your shoulders.
Your stomach.
Your knees.
Your heart.
Or perhaps there is simply a part of your body you've spent years judging.
Place your hands there gently.
You don't need to make anything happen.
You don't need to force the discomfort away.
You don't need to find some profound spiritual answer.
Just sit.
And say:
"Thank you."
Thank you for carrying this for me.
Thank you for everything you do.
Thank you for continuing to support me.
Thank you for being part of this life with me.
And then perhaps something even more powerful:
"I'm sorry I've been so hard on you."
What If You Became Your Body's Safe Place?
We spend so much of our lives looking for safety outside ourselves.
Someone who understands us.
Someone who accepts us.
Someone who doesn't judge us.
Someone who allows us to be exactly who we are.
But what if we could begin offering some of that safety to ourselves?
What if your body knew that when it was tired, you would listen?
When it needed nourishment, you would care for it?
When something felt wrong, you would seek help rather than ignore it?
When it changed with age, you wouldn't abandon it?
When it didn't look like somebody else's body, you wouldn't punish it?
What if your body could trust you?
That's such a beautiful question.
Because perhaps loving your body isn't about standing in front of a mirror every morning declaring that you love every inch of yourself.
Maybe it's much simpler.
Maybe loving your body means:
I'm going to stop treating you like my enemy.
Love Changes the Conversation
The body you have today isn't the body you had twenty years ago.
And it won't be the body you have twenty years from now.
It will change.
That's part of being human.
But perhaps our relationship with it can change too.
From criticism...
to curiosity.
From frustration...
to patience.
From judgment...
to gratitude.
From fighting...
to listening.
From:
"What's wrong with you?"
to:
"How can I care for you today?"
Imagine how different life might feel if that became the conversation you had with yourself.
Not just once.
But every day.
Final Thoughts
Your body has never asked you to be perfect.
It has simply continued showing up for you.
Breathing.
Beating.
Moving.
Feeling.
Experiencing.
Carrying you through this extraordinary human life.
Perhaps you've spent years wishing parts of it were different.
That's okay.
You don't need to adore everything about yourself today immediately.
But perhaps you can begin with something smaller.
Respect.
Gratitude.
Kindness.
A willingness to listen.
And the next time you notice yourself criticising your body, perhaps you can gently interrupt that familiar voice and say:
"You don't need more criticism from me. You need my love."
Because your body isn't just where you live.
It's the beautiful vessel through which you get to experience being alive.
A Gentle Reflection
Find a quiet moment today and place both hands gently on your body.
Close your eyes if that feels comfortable.
Take a slow breath.
Then ask yourself:
“Knowing that my body hears every word I speak and every thought I have about it… does my body know that I love it?”
Don't judge whatever answer comes.
Simply notice.
And then perhaps say:
"Thank you for carrying me."
"Thank you for staying with me."
"I'm sorry for the times I've been hard on you."
"I'm learning to listen."
"I'm learning to love you."
And then sit quietly for a moment.
No fixing.
No changing.
No demands.
Just you...
and this beautiful body that has been with you from the very beginning.
Perhaps today, instead of asking your body to change for you, you can simply choose to love it exactly where it is.
