Why Hurt People Hurt People

Looking Beyond People's Behaviour

Have you ever been hurt by someone and wondered,

"How could they treat me like that?"

It's a question many of us ask.

When someone lashes out, withdraws, criticises, or behaves in ways that hurt us, our first instinct is often to make their behaviour about us.

We assume they don't care.

We assume they intended to hurt us.

Sometimes that's true.

But many times, there's something much deeper happening beneath the surface.

People who are carrying deep emotional pain often express that pain in ways they don't even realise.

Not because they're bad people.

Because they're hurting.

A Lesson I Never Expected to Learn

After more than fifteen years of trying to have a baby, my husband and I decided to begin IVF.

When the pregnancy ended, I was devastated.

It felt as though everything I had hoped for disappeared overnight.

For years, I'd unknowingly believed that becoming a mother would finally make me feel whole.

That it would fill the emptiness I'd carried for so much of my life.

When I lost that baby, I wasn't just grieving the pregnancy.

I was grieving every hope I'd attached to it.

The pain inside me became overwhelming.

Instead of letting people in...

I pushed them away.

The People Who Loved Me Most

The people who tried hardest to comfort me were often the people I treated the worst.

I didn't want advice.

I didn't want someone telling me everything would be okay.

I didn't want anyone trying to fix what couldn't be fixed.

I wanted to be left alone.

Looking back now, I feel enormous compassion for the version of me that existed then.

I wasn't trying to hurt anyone.

I simply didn't know what to do with the pain I was carrying.

Pain Often Speaks Before Love Does

One of the greatest lessons that experience taught me was this:

Pain that isn't understood often becomes pain that's passed on.

Not intentionally.

Not maliciously.

Simply unconsciously.

Sometimes people become angry.

Sometimes they withdraw.

Sometimes they criticise.

Sometimes they become emotionally unavailable.

Every person expresses pain differently.

When we don't understand what's happening inside us, our emotions begin speaking through our behaviour.

Compassion Doesn't Excuse Behaviour

Understanding where someone's behaviour comes from doesn't mean we should accept being mistreated.

Healthy boundaries are still important.

Respect still matters.

But compassion allows us to stop carrying resentment.

Instead of asking,

"What's wrong with them?"

We begin asking,

"I wonder what they're carrying?"

That single question changes everything.

Because it allows us to see the human being beneath the behaviour.

Healing Begins With Ourselves

One of the most powerful gifts we can give the people around us is our own healing.

When we begin understanding our pain...

We stop expecting others to carry it.

We stop passing it on.

And slowly...

Our relationships begin to change.

Not because everyone else changes.

But because we do.

Final Thoughts

Every one of us has experienced pain.

Every one of us has reacted from that pain at some point in our lives.

The question isn't whether we've been hurt.

The question is whether we're willing to heal.

Because when we heal our own wounds...

We stop creating wounds in others.

And that may be one of the greatest acts of love we can ever offer the world.

Reflection Questions

  • Have I ever reacted from pain without realising it?

  • Is there someone whose behaviour I might understand differently today?

  • What emotional wounds am I still carrying?

  • What would healing those wounds make possible?

  • How can I respond with both compassion and healthy boundaries?
